The Iconic Turntable
Since the early 1990s, the term “iconic turn” — later, and perhaps more fittingly, called the “pictorial turn” — has been widely discussed in the humanities and social sciences. The idea (in linguistic analogy but conceptual opposition to the earlier “linguistic turn”) is that our understanding of the world — indeed, human thought itself — is not necessarily structured through language, but just as much, if not more, through images. (The downside of this “iconic turn” are the cultural pessimists warning of an apocalyptic flood of images, a maelstrom of visuals, signs, and logos in which truth, clarity, and legibility might ultimately drown...)
Images as independent, autonomous, and self-contained forms of existence — not needing to be translated into language or serving merely as indicators or symbols of something else: anyone familiar with the evolution of visual art since the dawn of modernism will recognize this perspective not as something new, but as a fundamental principle of that very development. (Accordingly, contemporary art could only respond with a calm shrug — if not outright boredom — to such “epiphanies” from its observers...). Endy Hupperich’s works thoughtfully and subtly explore these ideas — a way of thinking in images, in a world made of images. What might at first glance recall Pop Art or postmodern quotation may, in fact, be better understood as painted media theory, or even media ontology: a mapping of the world, a mapping of the space that images create — including the often-overlooked space between them. Consequently, in Hupperich’s practice, the traditional single panel painting — self-contained and complete in itself — plays a decreasing role, while the notion of *interpicturality* (so to speak), the dialogue and mutual referencing between images within a larger context, becomes ever more central. Motifs and visual fragments — all drawn from the empirical world of images surrounding Hupperich (as one of us, among us, with us) — reappear in new contexts and experimental arrangements. They do not form continuous narratives, but rather a network of intersecting, overlapping, surfacing and submerging similarities. It is, after all, the viewer’s task to reconstruct these connections — this *theoria* — into a coherent whole.
Not only do the conventional boundaries of the single image blur here, but also those between genres, media, and techniques: “classical” painting, drawing, spray work and stencil, collage, individually presented *objets trouvés*, wall painting, enlarged and rasterized photocopies, frames and passe-partouts, flat works and sculptural elements — all communicate, contrast, collide, and comment on one another with equal liveliness. The constantly migrating, transforming, de- and recontextualized image fragments they contain are just as dynamic. In Hupperich’s installations of recent years, these tendencies and strategies come fully into focus — revealing how deeply and seriously his work engages with reflection on images (“the main actors on the stage of cognition” — Sigrid Weigel), not merely with painting itself. And yet, paradoxically, it is precisely through these multi-media, non-hierarchical, exuberant iconotopes that one realizes what an astonishingly skillful and versatile painter Endy Hupperich truly is.

After finishing high school, I studied in Dresden and then worked in various fields. Since 2004, I have been living in Bavaria. In 2005, I finally started my own business as a web designer and graphic artist with a small advertising agency.
Over the years, I developed a love for photography. I find it endlessly fascinating what can be expressed through photos, how moments can be captured, and how memories can be preserved forever.
Other Interests
Traveling is not just a hobby for me, but a passion that has accompanied me since my youth. With my backpack, I have explored the world (including Morocco, Peru, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Greece, France, Romania, Slovakia, and Austria) and collected unforgettable experiences. Every country I visited not only offered new perspectives but also allowed me to experience the diversity of cultures and the warmth of people up close.
In recent years, I have mainly traveled through South Tyrol and France with my children and wife. Every journey has enriched me and taught me valuable lessons about life, people, and the world.
When I’m not traveling, I find balance through cycling and jogging. These activities often spark new ideas, insights, and thoughts that I like to develop further.
